cannot complete login due to an incorrect username or password

Hello all,

Recently I installed an ESXi 5 on a Cisco UCS C220 M3. When I tried to access ESXi from my notebook using vSphere or using SSH I got the message "cannot complete login due to an incorrect username or password".

If I go through monitor and keyboard, I can login normally. If I point to the IP address on my browser, I get the ESXi web interface. I mean, I have no connection problem and I'm not using the wrong username and password and I'm not using AD credential. It is local credential.

Looks like I need to perform some more task to get it done. What could be wrong ? I saw some KB talking about similar problem but all of them looks like does not apply to my scenario.

PS.: I didn´t configure DNS server and Custom DNS Suffixes.

Why proactive multicast performance test fails when health check passes?

vSphere/ESXi 6.0, all patches applied.  Multicast performance test is failing with 0.00 received bandwidth.  All other health checks including the multicast assessment and proactive storage performance tests are passing.

What can I check to determine the problem here?

vCenter 6 - can't deploy operations manager

I have a fresh vcenter 6 install and when i tell it to deploy operations manager it has greyed out the local source to browse.  It also has the URL path greyed out and i cannot change it.  I try to connect with my username and password and click next, but after awhile it just comes back cant connect to server?

I can manually download and deploy the OVA file, but then I do not see a way of syncing it to vcenter?  What am I missing?

Can't add network resource

Hi all,

Has anyone experienced not being able to add a network resource?

When I try to add a network, the list of port groups is empty.

When I had standard switch port groups, they would show up, but not distributed switch port groups.

The hosts and vCenter are version 6.0

Does anyone know of any documentation that takes you step-by-step to get Cloudera working with BDE?

Thanks

One iscsi vmkernel shows "Last Active" after change

$

We're running 5.5 and we have standard vSwitches with separate multipathed vswitches for management, vmotion and iscsi. We swapped 2 vmnics on one of our hosts today by moving one from vmotion to iscsi and vice versa so that it would match the network layout of our other hosts. The change went smoothly and everything appears to be fine, but since the change, one of the iscsi vmkernels shows a status of Active and the other shows "Last Active". Both show Compliant.  Does that mean that the active adapter on that vmkernel hasn't received traffic yet and will turn to Active when it does? Or is this something that I need to fix?

Thanks.

Moving vSphere provisioning from vCO Only to Guest Agent

$

Hello,

At the moment we are using a vCO Stub to do out Guest Customization.

Most Steps are in Guest Scripts injected by VMware Tools.

Now we checked the Guest Agent Way but there is a big Problem for us. All Provisioned VMs are in another Network than the vCAC IaaS Part…

And some of the actions required in the Guest are only possible in the destination Network e.g. Join an other domain.

At the moment during the provisioning process the VM is directly placed in the destination network.

Has anyone else to solve such a situation?

New Port Group Question

Hello,

I created a new port group in my lab and it is not showing up in the web client, but is in the thick client.

The only thing that I found is that my default filter applied, showing has 3/6 and I know that this count is correct, but I do not know how to see these other 3 port groups in the web client.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

ESXi 5.5 Changes in USB controller support?

$

Trying to upgrade my home lab to 5.5 to test out some of the new features before getting it rolling at work and I've run into a problem with installing it.

I have a pair of hosts running 5.1 installed to a USB key with an internal SSD for use as a host cache disk (prob to be swapped to vCache if i can ever get 5.5 to install).

5.1 and 5.0 before it recognised the USB key and installed to it with no problems, 5.5 however does not see the USB key at all. In fact as far as I can tell half way through the boot (at the yellow top half point) it seems to turn the USB subsystem off entirely as the usb keyboard plugged in turns off at this point. It does however continue booting off the USB cdrom drive

My best guess is that the UEFI boot is keeping the usb controllers in legacy mode and presenting them to the boot evironment, then ESXi starts the drivers for the USB controllers attempts to take them over from the UEFI bios and shuts them down/fails to load/who knows.

Wondering if anyone else has seen this and has a workaround?

My systems are:

ASUS P8H61-I R2.0 motherboard

i3-3220 cpu

USB key plugged into usb2 ports NOT the usb3 ports

VMWARE Workstation 11 failed to connect to server. Server is an unknown server. VMware Workstation cannot connect to this server.

Guys,

On my home lab, where i have a simple router (Netgear Nighthawk R7000) and two workstations after updating to WS11 i cannot connect one PC to another.  On 10 i had many shared vms on one pc, and would connect from my main box and run them.  I get this error: VMWARE Workstation 11 failed to connect to server. Server is an unknown server. VMware Workstation cannot connect to this server.

If i replace the name of the pc with the IP it will connect.  I did not have this issue on WS10.  I uninstalled 10 and recreated my old set up and still have this problem.....

I can connect with IP for the DNS name; however, I want to know whats going on and if this bug will be fixed.

Any advice?

Greeting from New York City. Yes this week I am traveling and the newsletter is brought to you from the wonderful New York City instead of it’s usual home in San Francisco. This week we have a very informative posting by our Senior TAM Services Development Manager, Eric Crossley. As part of the VMware Technical Account Manager program there are a number of deliverables that we provide our customers. One of these is the collection and presentation of customer metrics. Eric provides an explanation of these in his blog post.

VMware Technical Account Manager Customer Intelligence Program (Part 1 of 2)

By Eric Crossley

VMware Technical Account Manager (TAM) Services customers have an opportunity that those without TAMs do not – most notable, participation in the TAM Customer Intelligence Program. Upon opting in (under NDA protection), your TAM will undertake a thorough yet unobtrusive infrastructure interrogation process. The goal is to gather a range of specific data, including infrastructure configuration, types of hosts, and core virtualization achievements, among many others. [Read more…]

Enjoy your week everyone and I look forward to bringing you more VMware news next week.

VAAI support in vSphere Standard and up as of 6.0! (http://www.yellow-bricks.com/?p=16243)Advertise here with BSA After some internal discussions over the last months it was decided to move VAAI (vSphere APIs for Array Integration) and Multi-Pathing down to vSphere Standard as of 6.0. Main reason for this was that Virtual Volumes, by many considered as the natural evolution of VAAI, is also part of vSphere Standard. Improve vRealize Orchestrator Workflows for Efficiency and Scalability
Are you struggling to organize your vRealize scripts or workflows? Ted Spinks—VMware's TAM Tech Lead for Cloud Automation Portfolio—shows you techniques to maximize efficiency and scalability with scripts and workflows. The blog addresses some handy tips, like:

• How multiple scripts within a workflow can share connections to avoid over-consumption

• Setting up error handling to prevent orphaned PS Sessions and vCenter connections from causing issues

Better Together: VMware Hands-On Labs and Technical Account Managers
I've been traveling the Midwest lately speaking at VMUGs, USERCons, and vForum events. It's been a whirlwind few months talking to many people and answering questions on various topics, such as, “What's new with VMware vSphere 6?” “What are some new possibilities with technologies like VMware NSX and VMware vRealize Automation?” And—most of all—trying to answer the question, "How does a person keep up with all this new technology?" It certainly isn't easy, but there are tools available that can help. One such tool I've been amazingly lucky to be a part of has been VMware Hands-On Labs (HOLs). In my travels I've been completely amazed at how many people are not yet aware of this really awesome tool.

Have a fantastic week, please don’t forget to check the latest KB articles!

Is VMware View version 5.3.1 build-1634134 Compatible with SVGA 3D 8.14.1.24 Driver on Windows7?

Several users have noticed that their screen "flickers" black for 1 second or so several times when multiple application windows are open.  We have disabling the Windows Aero Scheme for the mouse as per http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2111278 but the problem persists.  As the combination in the subject of this post is not specifically marked as compatible in the chart found in the link below I would like to confirm if the SVGA driver should be downgraded.  VMware KB: The PCoIP server log reports the error: Error attaching to SVGADevTap, error 4000: EscapeFailed

Cannot drag and drop VMs in Workstation 10.0.6 library after upgrading to Xubuntu 15.04

$

After I have upgraded to Xubuntu 15.04, I can no longer use drag and drop virtual machines in library to rearrange their order. When I press the mouse button on the machines to start dragging it and move the cursor to some other place in the library, no horizontal line appears where the machine would be dropped. When I release the mouse button to drop the machine, nothing happens.

Can anyone reproduce this?
