VUM 6.0 service monitoring causing [VMware vCenter - Alarm alarm.HealthStatusChangedAlarm] status changed from green to gray and then gray to greeen

I am working with vCenter 6.0 in a TEST/LAB environment to mimic what I plan to do in production at some stage; I completed an in place upgrade from an existing 5.5 update 2 already running VUM on the same windows 2008 r2 virtual server. I have also upgraded the VUM component to 6 and it appears to be working correctly.

What's happening is that at random times I start to received alerts from vCenter Health Service monitoring as per the title of this post with the following detail -  9BED25BE-9530-4445-8A9D-B675904EFE0B_com.vmware.vcIntegrity status changed from gray to green or the other way depending - when I get these alerts I check in the web client and see that the VMware vSphere Extension is listed in the unknown section of the services health, then a little while later it returns to good.

having a look in the c:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware Update Manager\Logs folder at the stderrout.log files I can see the following is being logged at around the same time as the alerts are being generated

(actual ip address is replaced with <my server ip>)

Just wondering if anyone else has seen something similar, or if it is an issue with my installation, or a problem running vcenter server and vum on the same machine? I have reinstalled VUM and restarted the VM with no change to the behaviour; I have checked the performance of the VM and the host and nothing looks out of the ordinary...any ideas?

VCM Prerequisite Install Problem

All,

I'm trying to install VCM in a two tier configuration with the DB running MS SQL 2012. I've run the setup.exe and selected the Typical Installation option. The checks run and I come up with a few prerequisites that have failed. The first one is the VCM DB server. This is showing as No valid DB instance found. I've tried refreshing the box, entering the hostname as well as the FQDN. The SQL server browser service is also running on the SQL server. I am still not able to see the DB server. When I open SQL Server Mgmt Studio, the db server shows up there. There are no errors in the Event Log.

Additionally, SQL Server Utilities are installed.

.Net Framework 3.5 is configured.

SSRS and SQLXML are not installed at this point.

Any ideas?

Hi,

I'm trying to install ESXi 5.5 on a c240 M3 UCS Cisco.

The local drive is a FlexFlash Raid 1 of 2 sd cards.

At the time of install, esx sees the local 30g card.

asks language, root password and when I click on install, it gives an error. (see attached files)

this program has encountered an error: parted util,  Can't have a partition outside the disk

I have 2 exactly configured servers, out of the box, same error... any idea?

Hi,

We were testing vSphere Web client 5.5 SDK chassis sample and found following issues with 5.1 compatibility.

    1. Chassis (5.5 SDK ) sample works fine with 5.5 web client and 6.0 web client server.

     2. While same example deployed on vSphere web client 5.1 sercver, it throws error 1009.

Any help on above context, we are referring 5.5 SDK for our plugin development and same issue is occurred on our UI as well.

Thanks

VCenter Server 5.1 show migrated VM on old and new Storage

$

Hello,

we update 2 vsphere 5.0 Hosts to 5.1 and the vcenter too. Now we connect new Storage to the vsphere Hosts and migrate some of the VMs on the new Store.

(all of them have latest VMtools installed, are the latest VM HW-Version, they have no ISO, Floppy-Images or something else attached) Cause of Vsphere Essential we made the Storage Migration when then VMs were offline.

After the successfull storage-migration of all VMs, we saw that 3 VMs show us under Resources of the VM the old and the new datastore, also on the inventory of the datastore we saw on both datastore the vm, but when we browse the datastore the VMS are only (correct) on the new datastore.

I know that happens if some iso, images etc. are connected when the VM ist migrated, but we checked that double an there is no reference to the old datastore at the settings of the VM. When we connect direct to the host the VM datastore is show us correct only the new datastore.

How can we fix this????

Best regards

Hyperic OVA Deployment Issues

Checking to see if anyone has experienced an issues deploying the 5.8.4 OVA.  It would appear the vApp deploys fine but on boot the DB server looks like it has an issue with Dev3 on mount which it claims it is already mounted.  It then runs a disk check and when the script runs for the DB deployment it fails on sector 0?

If I delete and try again same result...

Cheers,

how to get NTP client to log time differences with NTP source? (ESXi 5.5U1)

$

KB1005092 describes lots of useful messages that the NTP client puts in syslog.log. But I can't find them, I only get messages if I stop/start the NTP client, nothing about time differences. For example if I stop the NTP client, change the clock by a minute or 2 then start the NTP client I only get a message saying it stopped and started, although time synchronisation is working. Does anyone know how to enable these messages please? We have ESXi 5.5U1.

I've also got a ticket open with VMware and I'll add what they say to this discussion... so far they've advised adding a line "logconfig=all" to /etc/ntp.conf. But I can't see how to permanently edit ntp.conf because when I start the NTP client it seems to write a new ntp.conf file, which doesn't have this line of course, and the logging in syslog.log is unchanged.

If anyone's interested in why we're so interested in our hosts' clocks, what happened was:

- Some of our VMs require accurate clocks. The VMs have NTP clients in their guest o/s (linux), but when a VM is migrated between hosts its clock wanders briefly, causing alerts

- To solve this VMware advised us to set pref.timeLagInMilliseconds to 10ms on each VM. This means that when a VM is migrated between hosts its clock is synchronised to the destination host's clock if the time difference between VM and host is over 10ms

- This is happening but we're still getting some alerts, and we want to know how closely our hosts' clocks are synchronising to their NTP source (which is the same as the VMs' NTP source).

Thanks for any help.

Windows 7 Guest NOT Saving Device Settings

$

Hello All,

VMWare:  VMWare Player Version 6.0.6 build-2700073

Guest:  Windows 7 Professional 32-bit

Host:    OpenSuSE 11.4 i586

For some reason everytime I boot up my Windows 7 guest, any printer settings I set before shutting down are now gone.

I have about 5 or 6 printers configured in the Devices and Printers page of Control Panel, and whenever I boot up my VM the printers are still present here, but VMWare is changing the Port from a TCP/IP port with an IP Address to this TPVM "Port". See screenshot below...

          Printer_Ports-Tab_Screenshot.jpg

Also, the driver for the printers are all being changed as well... I had installed the manufacturer drivers for each printer I have listed. But if I change it back to the correct one, save it, and then tomorrow when I boot back up the VM it will have changed back to this strange looking driver called "TP PS Driver ..." followed by a bunch of numbers and letters. All the printers' drivers are changed to that TP PS Driver, but each one is followed by a different string of characters like below. *See screenshot below...

          Printer_Advanced-Tab_Screenshot.jpg

Also, the default printer gets changed after every reboot as well. It gets changed to some printer just called "print". But, I do have a network printer configured on my Linux Host just called "print" as well, so I'm thinking it's pulling that in from the Host, if that's possible...

Anyone have any ideas as to why these settings are lost after everytime I reboot/shutdown? Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in Advance,

Matt

I tried updating our standalone ESXi 6.0 version with the latest patch and get the below error I have done many of these on ESXi 5.5 and had no issues.

I tried a new download and even changed target folders and get the same message

Is there something new in 6.0 that needs to be added?

thanks

Can EVC help? and implications

hi fellows:

I have one datacenter which have:

  1. one cluster named cluster-DES (made  of 4 blades with Xeon E5-2440 @2.4 Ghz AFAIK "Sandy Bridge EN" Processor 2 sockets x 6 cores / each blade)
  2. one cluster named cluster-PAH (made of 6 blades with Xeon E5640 @2.7 Ghz (AFAIK "Westmere EP" Processor 2 sockets x 4 cores / each blade).
  3. all the clusters are managed by one vCenter (a  windows vms)
  4. all the nodes are VMware ESXi, 5.5.0, 2403361.

When I tried to migrate a powered-on vms from one host of cluster-DES to another host on cluster-PAH; I received and error:

The virtual machine requires hardware features that are unsupported or disabled on the target host:

*General incompatibilities

If possible, use a cluster with Enhanced vMotion Compatibility (EVC) enabled; see KB article 1003212.

CPUID details: incompatibility at level 0x1 register 'ecx'.

Hosts bits: 0000:0010:1001:1000:0010:0010:0000:0011

Required:   x001:x11x:10x1:1xx0:xxx0:xx1x:xx0x:xx11

Of course there is no problem or issues when the vms if powered-off.

After reading the mentioned article I have my doubts:

  1. I have to apply EVC on the cluster with most recent CPU (in my case the "Sandy Bridge EN") ??
  2. will EVC affect negatively the performance of the processors either the new ones or older ones?
  3. EVC just works when I try to move the vms (powered-on) from a newer blade to the older one?
  4. EVC will require a reboot or additional steps after activating?
  5. If I suddenly remove the older cluster-PAH can I disable EVC or is better left it Activated ??

Thanks in advanced, for your help/inputs.

PD: I have to post, since I have mixed answers from VCPs to my questions.
