FROM THE EDITORS VIRTUAL DESK
Hi everyone and welcome to the second newsletter of 2020. Its already the middle of January and so much news and many updates to share with you. If you are not aware we also have a few social media options for you including Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn to keep you connected to our TAM community. We regularly post to these sources and they are also a great way to keep up to date.

In keeping with our theme of modernizing applications, my question this week is how are you managing containers in your organization? The proliferation of containers will continue to increase and our tools to manage and facilitate all that is great with containers also continues unabated, but connecting all of these together can be really hard. Organizations are finding that as soon as their container count grows, so does the complexity in orders of magnitude, often outpacing their ability to come up with a sufficient strategy, and oftentimes putting the brakes on. As a TAM we are ideally positioned to assist our customers and help them make the best possible use of your VMware ad related technology, so keep us informed and reach out to us for guidance, we are always there to help.

I look forward to speaking to you in the next edition.

FROM THE EDITORS VIRTUAL DESK
Hi everyone, third newsletter of 2020 already and almost the end of January, so much news! This week we have TAM Webinars, new KB articles, Security Advisories, Kubernetes updates and more. One of the questions I have been getting recently is how to get started with Kubernetes. There are so many resources and guides, the list is endless. To help getting started I always recommend the following.

In addition you might want to take a look at the VMware offerings at cloud.vmware.com where you will find information on things such as PKS (Pivotal) and more related to Kubernetes. I hope you find these useful to get started and also suggest discussing with your TAM or VMware representative.

Until the next edition...

FROM THE EDITORS VIRTUAL DESK
Hi everyone, this week I wanted to give you information on another exciting new Kubernetes related solution from VMware in the form of the next version of VMware Fusion for Mac. As I am sure many of you know Fusion has been a leading type 2 virtualization platform on the Mac for a very long time. As the Mac has progressed and the type of applications we consume have changed, Fusion has been a leader in this space. The next version of Fusion has just been announced and is available for you to download and try as a Tech Preview as 'Project Nautilus'. Adding full support for containers on the desktop via an easy to use command line directly into Fusion means developers can create apps for many different platforms and with extremely complex technical requirements, for example requiring suitable databases etc, that are virtualized via Fusion and then accompanying containers as well. This allows them to easily extend their desktop development workflow in a single product. The tech preview is a great way to get to know this new technology. Head over to the blog here for more information.

This week we have a full newsletter with Webinars, new KB articles and of course many interesting articles from the world of virtualization so please enjoy.

VMware Fusion - Project Nautilus
Project Nautilus enables Fusion to run OCI compliant containers on the Mac in a different way than folks might be used to. Our initial release can run containers, but as we grow we’re working towards being able to declare full kubernetes clusters on the desktop. By leveraging innovations we’re making in Project Pacific, and a bevy of incredible open source projects such as runC, containerD, Cri-O, Kubernetes and more, we’re aiming to make containers first-class citizens, in both Fusion and Workstation, right beside virtual machines. Currently a command-line oriented user-experience, we’ve introduced a new tool for controlling containers and the necessary system services in VMware Fusion and Workstation: vctl.

CLOUD NATIVE APPS @ VMWARE
Managing Kubernetes at enterprise scale: A closer look at Tanzu Mission Control
As Kubernetes continues to mature—rounding the corner toward its 6th birthday—we’ve started to see a shift in terms of the challenges our customers need to solve. Initially, Kubernetes installation was complex. As multiple solutions for installation and lifecycle management sprang up, companies seeking to adopt Kubernetes had to figure out the right approach. With the open source community standardizing on technologies like Cluster API for installation and declarative lifecycle management of multiple clusters, we’re now seeing a path toward consistency in this respect across clouds....[continue reading!]

FEATURED
Kubernetes without Microservices
First, let's see what Kubernetes brings to the table: The biggest benefit of running Kubernetes as the basis of your infrastructure is removing "snowflakes". In a non-Kubernetes infrastructure, servers or VM turn into snowflakes: they are all the same but also different. Servers that run your MySQL are different from those running your Redis and those running your Java API are different from those running your frontend Node.js web application. There are ways to make those snowflakes easier to manage for sure: Chef, Puppet, Ansible, and all other configuration management systems are parts of that toolset, but they just make building snowflakes easier, they don't turn them into identical servers.
Kubernetes, on the other hand, takes in your servers and turns them into uniform "nodes". You can take a node out and replace it with another one while the workload sitting on top of them can be your API, frontend or database, completely oblivious to the type of node they are running on. This has huge implications on many aspects of your operations: It makes applying security patches easier and more standard, leading your infrastructure to be more secure. It also increases your high availability by allowing you to swap faulty nodes with new ones or resizing small ones with bigger ones without the downtime and little impact.
Another major benefit of using Kubernetes is that it mostly forces any infrastructure change to be performed through configuration files that enforce and standardize the documentation of infrastrcuture. On top of that, using Kubernetes means running applications in containers which in turn means using files like Dockerfile to define the application's operational requirements.
None of these great benefits above have anything to do with Microservices or exclusively benefit large organizations.
They work to benefit both small and large teams with or without DevOps personnel. They don't require breaking up monoliths into Microservices and having to deal with the challenges that it brings about.
Microservices, like any other technology, can be beneficial for certain circumstances, depending on your requirements. Kubernetes is also the same: not all teams need to run on a Kubernetes cluster. But coupling these two together limits the scope of their usefulness and reduces the size of the applicable audience they can benefit enormously.

Empowering your Remote Workforce with VMware Solutions – Brian Madden
March 2020 – Empowering your Remote Workforce with VMware Solutions
Date: Thursday, April 9th
Time: 11:00am EST/ 10:00am CST/ 8:00am PST
Duration: 1.5 Hour
Synopsis:
Brian Madden will discuss how VMware EUC solutions like Workspace ONE and Horizon can enable users to work from home, or anywhere else they need. This is something that everyone knows in theory, but now with increased demand for remote working, we’ll dig into the specific scenarios with concrete steps that can be taken today. Topics discussed will include:
- How real is stretching an on-prem Horizon environment to the cloud?
- How quickly can you stand up a new Horizon cloud-based environment, and what’s really required?
- Is it possible to manage BYO / employee-owned laptops from anywhere, possibly negating the need for VDI or RDS?
- How real are VMware’s Zero Trust capabilities which ensure you can trust workers’ devices regardless of where they are or who owns them?
Guest speaker:
Our presenter will be Brian Madden, from VMware’s EUC Office of the CTO. Brian has been focusing on EUC for 25 years. Prior to joining VMware in 2018, he was the creator of BrianMadden.com and the BriForum conference, as well as author of thousands of blog posts and six books.

Install VPN on Vmware 6.7 ESXI host

Hey i am kind of new with vmware, i have a vmware 6.7 host running almost 150 VM's with Win 7. What i want to do is install a VPN connection on the main host so i don't have to manually configure vpn on each VM, hope that makes sense. Any thought or suggestions will be highly appreciated.

Software Components in VRA 8

In vRA 7.x I am using software components to run PowerShell scripts when the OS is deployed in a particular lifecycle stage.

What is the equivalent area to do this in vRA 8?  I don't see anything.  I went into Code Stream which seems most likely, but only see the ability for node Js, Python2/3, and Shell for custom integrations.

Any idea on how to run powershell?

Need Hyper-V for Win10 development. Would like PS script to Disable and also Enable Hyper-V, etc.?

I've read many many threads listing all kinds of different steps to disable hyper-v, to remove Hyper-V, to update registry entries - to get VMware 15 running.

I need Hyper-V for development, but I can turn if off for when I need to use VMware.  Haven't gotten that to work yet.

There MUST be other developers like me out there in the same boat?  Is there a PowerShell script that would turn everything OFF and another to turn everything ON again?

After installing Hyper-V, I couldn't run (obviously) VMware, and I'm trying to figure a workable solution as it looks like it will be Months before a VMware solution is available to co-exist with Hyper-V.

I'm really surprised that VMware doesn't provide an 'official' solution, as the patchwork of different 'fixes' seems less than I would have hoped from the best VM company?

Some of the steps seem to be:

created DWORD Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\DeviceGuard\EnableVirtualizationBasedSecurity and left it 0

created DWORD HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\LSA\LsaCfgFlags and left it 0

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\DeviceGuard\Scenarios\HypervisorEnforcedCodeIntegrity\Enabled -> 0

DG_Readiness_Tool_v3.6.ps1 -Disable

Disable-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName VirtualMachinePlatform

bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype off

Thanks!

Drive Issues with Ubuntu VMDK file Imported from VirtualBox

$

My company distributes a local web server that runs on an Ubuntu VM. Our default deployment is to install VirtualBox on a client's physical server.

Some of our clients use virtual servers, so we've been trying to accommodate VMWare and Hyper-V installs. We've installed live versions on VMWare twice successfully as well as on a trial version of VMWare Workstation 15.5. So far we've done this by taking the raw VMDK file from a VirtualBox instance and adding it as a harddrive to a new VMWare instance.

We've run into a problem with a new client that is running VMWare ESXi 6.0 (with vSphere and vCenter). They went through a similar process to create a new VM and add the VMDK file as a hard drive, but the VM is failing in the boot sequence:

My knowledge with Ubuntu and VMWare is very limited, so I'm at a bit of a loss how to proceed. The client's IT guy tried running the fsck command manually, but it kept giving us the same error for multiple devices:

and eventually threw this:

The fact that we've got this working on three different VMWare systems leads me to believe the issue might be with the way we're adding the hard drive, or with the VM settings.

Has anyone else tried doing this sort of import of a VirtualBox VMDK file into VMWare? Is there a better way to do this, maybe using the VBox OVA file instead? Any relevant VM settings I can tinker with?

Any context or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Please let me know if you need additional information

Mouse click not working in VMWare Fusion 11.5.2 running on Catalina

Hi everyone,

I've got VMWare Fusion 11.5.2 running on Catalina. My mouse click is not being recognised inside all VMs I run, the keyboard is recognised though. I've tried a number of combinations of adding/re-adding VMWare Fusion into the "accessibility" setting under System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Accessibility, but it hasn't worked. I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling VMWare but that hasn't worked either.

I also run Parallels, and that is working ok, however I need to get VMWare working for the *.ova I have.

Appreciate any assistance!

Drew

DHCP with NSX-T

When NSX-T is managing an environment does DHCP relay on a VLAN not work?

For example I have a segment backed by a VLAN and in that VLAN I have a DHCP server.

After deploying NSX-T and creating the VLAN backed segments and moving the VMs from vDS to N-DVS I am no longer able to obtain a DHCP lease from the Windows Server on the same segment.

Looking at how NSX-T DHCP Relay works you can't use it with a VLAN backed segment unless I am missing something.

Does ESXi work with AMD Ryzen?

ESXi 6.7.0 U2 and ESXi 6.5.0 U2 both give the same error.  I am using an MSI B450-A-Pro motherboard, AMD Ryzen 7 1700 and 32G RAM.  I get the following error, " no network adapters were detected.  either no network adapters are physically connected or a suitable driver could be located."

Any help would be appreciated.

Operation inconsistent with current state

Pop-up window when resuming a suspended virtual machine:

Operation inconsistent with current state

What does this mean?  Why is it appearing?  What should I do about it?

Clicking on OK merely dismisses the pop-up error.  No detectable change elsewhere.  Activity monitor shows machine mostly idle with no CPU or memory hogs.  Nothing else running on machine except normal maintenance and system tasks.  Incidentally, the suspended machine never resumed after an hour when I gave up.

Application:

   - VMWare Fusion 11.5.0 (14634996)

+ Display: Accelerate 3D Graphics: off

      + Compatibility: hardware version 16

OS:

   - MacBook Pro running High Sierra 10.13.5

Unable to installvCenter converter

I am trying to install vCenter converter standalone 6.2 and I am receiving an error that it can't copy converter-agent.xml, error 29163. I am running Windows 7 x64.

I have tried:

1) running directly as an administrator.

2) Stopping the vmware processes.

3) Fixing the permissions on the temp folder.

4) Stopping AVS.

5) Disabling UAC.

I can see that the file is created and then deleted. I am not on a managed workstation or on a domain but on a personal computer. I am trying the local install. Should I try the server? I am attaching the error and the logs. Please advise what else I should do.

Workstation 12 won't run

I am unable to use Workstation 12 on Linux mint cinnamon 12.9. The installer completed successfully and I have the icon but it isn't loading. No error messages. At install time I launched it from the command line and I got a few errors but then I got the workstation installation menu and that completed successfully.

I initially used instructions from here: VMware: How to install? - Linux Mint Forums

I also tried running the first command from here after the install: https://www.linuxtechi.com/install-vmware-workstation-12-on-ubuntu-16-04-linux-mint-18/

That completed successfully but it still won't run. Please advise. I'm including a screenshot of the initial errors. If you need any logs please tell me where they are and I will get them for you.

Black screen and connection timeout error after updating from Windows version 1809 to 1909

I first downloaded the Client version 4.1.0 and logged into my virtual network without any issue. Then later my PC was updated with the latest Windows security patch 02-2020 and also to the new 1909 version. Since then I am unable to successfully connect to the network. I am able to go all the way till the desktop selection after logging in, but after that all I see is a black screen for a while and then I get the "Connection timed out" error dialog box.

This is very important and urgent for my WFH, so please help me with this ASAP.

I have seen that there are some more similar questions on the site, but mine is a bit different than the others. So kindly take the time to read and understand my issue.

Thank you.

Hi

I would like to put an esxi host in maintenance mode, but also I would like to know when the ESXi is on maintenance mode, then reboot the esxi once in maintenance mode, and check when it comes back up to exit maintenance mode. Hope I make sense

connect-viserver

$esxihost="esxi"

get-vmhost -name $esxihost | set-Vmhost -state Maintenance

"I would like to check the status until esxi is on maintenance mode"

Restart-VMhost $esxihost

" check when comes up into maintenance mode"

get-vmhost-Name $esxihost | set-VMhost -state connected

How am I doing??

Thanks
