Can you please help me get rid of the annoying "to release input, press ctrl-alt" popup balloons?

Using VMWare Workstation 8.0.1 build-528992

Host OS is Windows 7

Guest OS is CentOs

Working in full-screen mode

Hey all,

For some reason, these stupid hint balloons keep popping up when I'm in full screen mode.  They either say "to release input, press ctrl-alt" or "To direct input to this virtual machine type ctrl-g".

I have "Enable All Hints" and "Show Enabled Hints" unchecked, and I have this line in my .VMX file :

hints.hideAll = "TRUE"

Could you please help me get rid of these popup balloons?  They keep popping up and I can't make them stay away.  It's really annoying.  And looking back in the help forums, it looks like this has been a problem for years.  What's the deal here?

Cheap Network card for ESXi??

Hello,

I am installing ESXi to learn more about VMs, etc.  My existing network (Netgear) is not supported.  Can someone make a recommendation for a cheap SUPPORTED network card? Yes, I realize there is a hardware compatibility list, however the cards I have quickly checked are pretty expensive.

Thanks

Nothing in VMware player responds

I have had a player set up for about 8 months now.  I installed my OS (Windows7) and another program in it and all worked fine until I tried to access it today.  When I opened and activated the player, my mouse moves around in it but I click on the icons in the player and am unable to start them. A right-click does not bring up a menu as it used to either.  I was being prompted to update the software, which I had put off the last couple of times so this time I figured I would go ahead and update. The update did not solve this issue and I still am unable to access the program I had within the player.  I need to access this program.  HELP!

Cheap NIC

Hi,

I currently work for a charity and we are currently using hyper-v for our virtualisation and am looking to move to vsphere 5 due to the lack of usb and serial passthrough in hyper-v.  I also now understand it supports Realtek nics which are a lot cheaper than the intel ones.

I have tried to install Vsphere yet, so don't know which nics are and are not supported

Can anyone recommend any cheap nics which are confirmed as working in VSphere 5 as I am not overly confident at building a custom image with the required drivers.

I will probably be purchasing them from www.cclonline.com, so any recomendations from this place would be a great help.

Thanks

Andy

Workstation 9 - ESXi 5.1 guest and 10GBe NIC

$

OK, I have a beefy machine running Windows 2012 Server and VMW Workstation 9. The machine has a dual port 1GB NIC and a dual port 10GBe NIC.

All CPU features are enabled in the i7 3820 CPU, so all is good running 64bit stuff.

I have 2 esxi VM's connected to the Automatically Bridged 1GB NIC. The virtual NIC's are "el1000" are in a vCenter Cluster, 2 nodes of course.

Each esxi is connected to an iSCSI target with a 200GB LUN.

Within each of the 2 esxi VM's I have 1 Windows 2008 R2 VM's, one in each esxi VM. Both Windows 2008 R2 VM's are in the iSCSI LUN.

The 2 Windows 2008 R2 VM's are connected to the vswitch of each esxi host, the 1Gb vswitch.

Tthose Windows 2008 R2 VM's fire up fine. Performance is as expected because they are only connected to the iSCSI LUN at the 1GB NIC.

So that configuration works as expected.

Since that worked, I decided, let's use the 10GBe NIC. So I unmounted all iSCSI LUNS and removed the iSCSI target from the iSCSI adpter in both esxi VM's. I'm back to a "Raw build" if you will.

Since I did not have an SFP+ DAC connection to a 10GBe switch, I put an SFP+ Loopback and everything was now pingable on the 10GBe port.

Since my target was presenting the LUN to a 1GB NIC/Subnet, I redirected the target LUN to the subnet of the 10GBe NIC/Subnet.

Everything was pingable on the 10GBe. Awesome right?

Then, I added a new vmnic6 in workstation 9 in "Virtual Network Editor" and "Bridged" vmnic6 to the 10GBe NIC. Next, I added a NIC as a "vmxnet3" to each esxi VM, then configured a vswitch in each esxi VM. No problem there. I see a "10000 FULL" synch/connection. Cool.

Next I configured the iSCSI initiators in each esxi VM to connect to the 200GB iSCSI LUN. The refresh occurs and both esxi VM's see the LUN and it mounts.

At this point, all connections are there and the iSCSI is connected at 10GB/s.

So I import the VM's that reside in the iSCSI LUN, one in each esxi VM. They import fine.

So I power on one of the Windows 2008 R2 VM's that is hosted on the first esxi host and...........PSOD!!!!!

I attached the screenshot.

PSOD.jpg

Can anyone make anything out of this?.........lol

I can repeat this everytime.

I laugh because I am probably using WS incorrectly or something.

I did however flash the 10GBe NIC to it's lates BIOS from QLogic/HP.

Thanks

Unable to increase datastore size , Increase Button Grey out

Hi, really can use some expert advise,  I can not find answers or solution anywhere else.

Situation:  we increase a 100 GB SAN disk to 175 GB (VMFS 5.58 1MB block)  , but when we go to the datastore properties of the datastore, the "Increase" button is greyed out.

Setup:  ESXi 5.1 HOST running free license.  The properties view indicates it see the total capacity increase from 100 to 175.  We are log in as "root" with admin access.

Here is what we tried and checked.

1.  make sure we are connecting to the host. (this is a standalone setup, so we only connect to the host)

2.  no snapshot.  (again free license, very limited features)

3.  reboot the host.

4.  power down VM, and tried , "increase still greyed out.

5.  we have an internal SAS disk, and the "increase" button is available.

6.  Check free space, it still has 3.38GB avaialble out of 100GB.  (not sure if this can be an issue)

I've been trying to work on some ldap settings in vcenter but have been experiencing a problem.  On 5.1 when I log into the web client and click Administration I can see the sign on and discovery section but there is nothing under it.  I'm logged in with a user that has full rights.  Can anyone tell me why this section might be missing?

Recompose a single vm with powercli?

Need a bit of direction please.

I can get all info about a single vm, and the pool that it belongs to.

I can send a recompose to an entire pool

What I need to do is send a recompose to a single workstation.

Here are the scripts that I have been working with so far.

This gives me the machine name and the pool where this machine lives

ForEach ($vm in (Get-DesktopVM)) {If ($vm.user_displayname -match "joeuser") {Write-Host $vm.Name, $vm.pool_id}}

This will set the base image and snapshot for new machines that get created in the pool

Update-AutomaticLinkedClonePool -pool_id Train -parentvmpath "/vm/Discovered virtual machine/ViewComposerImages/General_Base" -parentsnapshotpath /08-28-2012/"08-28-2012 Train"

This will send a scheduled recompose to the entire pool

Get-DesktopVM -pool_id Train | Send-LinkedCloneRecompose -schedule "$RECTrain" -parentvmpath "/vm/Discovered virtual machine/ViewComposerImages/General_Base" -parentsnapshotpath /08-28-2012/"08-28-2012 Train" -forceLogoff $true -stopOnError $false

This pool contains 30 machines, what I need to do is send a recompose to just 1 machine in this pool

Thank you in advance for any assistance..

Network Slow on Linux Host

$

I have very similar windows 2k guest machines (cloned from same source) running on Both Linux host (OpenSuse 12.3) and Windows host (Win7).

On Linux host, a simple ping command from the Guest to some remote site takes three times as long as a ping from the Winodws Hosted guest.

On a windows host, ping time from the guest closely matches that of the host on both a Nat and a bridged adaptor in the virtual machine.

On a Linux host the ping time is almost 3 times as long as the host machine's ping time, on both NAT and Bridged connections.

Both host machines exhibit the same ping time.

In all cases the nics are set as 1Gig nics and bandwidth is set as unlimited.  Both hosts are cabled to the same switch and premisis infrastructure.

Why is the Linux hosted networking so much slower, and is there a setting I can adjust?

Scanning with ThinApps

Hey Everybody,

I work in a clinical environment, and one of the applications we are ThinApp'ing will be utilized by persons performing registration, and will require for documents to be scanned into the application.

Initial attempts have proven unfruitful. The application seems to be able to see the scanner. When I click on the menu that lets me choose a scanner, it is listed in the dropdown list correctly. However, when I actually attempt to scan, the application gives an error message stating that it cannot communicate with the scanner. My suspicions are that the scanner isn't able to communicate back with the process from the app that is initializing the scan, since the app is in the virtual environment, and the scanner is not.

Here are some methods I've attempted in order to get this going. I'll admit, I'm definitely not a guru when it comes to reading out logmon reports, so I may be going the wrong direction with this.

  • ChildProcessEnvironementDefault=External to force Child processes to load in the physical environment
  • AllowExternalProcessModifications=1
  • ExternalDLLs= listing all of the dll's it seems the application uses to scan

Does anyone have any insight on what would be needed to get this application to scan? I do realize that virtualizing the twain drivers is not possible, but I didn't know if that meant that applications could not scan.

Agentless Anti-virus?

$

What do you recommend for agentless anti-virus?  We are looking at Trend Micro's Deep Security product, but each host requires a dedicated virtual appliance.  So far this sounds like we can't use DPM anymore to power down unneeded hosts as it will have a VM assigned to it and they don't seem to have any scripts or anything in place to handle this.

Other recommendations or other news regarding this?

How do I read the BUlletin ID or Qnumber?

I was told that some patches may have 2 entries: a installer and an uninstaller.

The difference was that these might be hotfixes that have not yet been incorporated into a service pack

If this is correct, how do I know which is which type.  If I have an auto deploy policy, then scan1 will install the patch and scan2 will uninstall it.  I would think there might be a safeguard for this?

Please correct me if I am mistaken.

Thanks,

Dan

Confused about Update1 and esxcli VIB or Profile install

$

Our update manager has been flaky so I have decided to push 5.1 U1 via esxcli. I have done it a long time ago, but the proflie install seems new.

So for the Zip bundle once I upload it, should i "esxcli software profile update(not install)" or "esxcli software vib install" ??

And if using the profile install, I assume I am going to use the standare profile with NO "s"---in others everything--not just the security patches.

Thanks!

.vmdk size doesn't match Disk size setting in Settings

Windows gave me a "drive space low" error today so I went to add some space to the virtual disk but noticed an odd discrepancy...

Looking at the size of the actual .vmdk file, it's only 49.29 GB. When I open the settings for the VM, the "Disc size" setting is 233.73 GB. Windows reports the disc as 45.9 GB.

disksize.jpg

This VM was migrated from my Boot Camp partition before. What's weird is that the partition from which this VM came was only 50 GB. (My whole hard drive is only 250 GB) The VM is now on a 2TB external.

What's going on here? I don't want a 233.76 GB virtual disk but I can't drag the slider to the left?

Connecting host and client over bridged network when host is offline

I'm setting up a test-system using a laptop with VMWare Workstation.

The host is a regular Win7 x64, and clients a mix of different machines - Win2k3, win2k8R2, Win7, WinXP and Linux.

I wish the clients to access the network over bridged - not NAT - using static IP's. The host also use staic IP. I also need to be able to use this setup when the host is not connected to the network.

Question:
How do I manage to make the host communicate with the clients, when the host-NIC is "not connected" (whenever det host is offline).

Only the First guest OS I boot up can see the network

Hello everyone,

At work we currently work exclusively out of VMs. Usually we have more than one VM open at a time, but we always boot up and shut down multiple VMs everyone day. We are using VmWare player 4.0.4 and I know that is old but we cannot use anything newer. All of the VMs are set up to connect to the network with NAT. Now, the problem I am having is that only the first VM I boot up everyday can see the network. After that I have to reboot my computer in order to get a different VM to see the network. The weird thing is that they can all get to the internet through the network, but cannot access any of the network drives. None of my co-workers seem to be having the problem so I must have changed a setting on my computer or something. Has anyone run into this problem before or have any solutions? Here are some specifics on my setup.

Host: Windows 7 64-bit

Guests: Either Windows XP SP3 or Windows 7 32-bit

Network: Set to NAT, cannot get any more specific information from VmWare player.

I have tried disabling the VmNet adapter on both the guests and the hosts.

I have reinstalled VmWare player multiple times and removed all the config files between installs.

I have tried using ipconfig on guest OS.

I looked in the knowledge base on VmWare and tried everything they recommended but nothing seems to be working.

View 5.2 Desktop status stops at "startup"

Dear All,

I have installed View 5.2 newly to implement in production environment currently running with View 5.1. In View 5.2 whenever I create new desktop pool (Linked clones as well as Full clones) after provisioning some of the desktops status will stay at "startup" stage. This I observed from the beginning. Created new master image following best practices (adding vmxnet3 vNic). still the problem exists. This system need to move production in few days. I’m grateful if anyone can help to solve this issue.

Thanks..
