How to remove VMs from vSphere HA calculation

$

0

Hi,

I use "Cluster resource percentage"

I tried the "VM overrides" and disabled everything for multiple VMs.

However it does not affect the calculation of the admission control shown in summary tab. Meaning for example I still see the same amount of memory used in blue.

I understand VMware HA admission control checks all powered-on VMs. So is there any way to exclude certain also from calculation ?

Migrate vmkernel port group from distributed switch to standard switch without vCenter Server

Hi,

I need a general workaround for the following problem in a vSphere 6.5 environment:

One Distributed Switch configured with port groups for VMs and one vmkernel port group for the management.

No standard switch is in use or available at the ESXi hosts.

In case of a crash of the vCenter Server, and if no backup of the vCenter is available, how can I restore a standard switch and migrate the existing vmkernel port group from the distributed switch to the standard switch?

I can login to the "host client" to the ESXi host directly, see the existing vmkernel port group at the dvSwitch, but I cannot move it to the newly created standard switch.

Is there any solution for this??

Kind Regards,

Andre

using Nvidia K2200 in ESXi v6.5.0, 3D Graphics

Hi, this is my first venture into VMware. I've have some experience with VMs with Hyper-V, but I'm no expert.

I'm trying to set up my first VMware host. I have a Xeon workstation (Dell Precision 3620) with a Nvidia K2200 graphics card. We will be running 3D graphics programs (AutoCAD, Revit, Google Earth Pro) on the VMs, so we need to have a hardware graphics accelerator available to the VMs. I see the Enable 3D Support under 3D Graphics in the machine options. I would think that is what I need, but the option is grayed out. I manually enabled it by setting the parameter "mks.enable3d = TRUE". That seemed to tell my programs that they had hardware graphics support, but performance was worse -- I think the VM was promising something that it wasn't able to deliver.

I'm working on my host/vms through the web interface. When look at my host, under Manage, Hardware, I see the Quadro K2200, but it's listed as Disabled. I thought I might need to install a driver, so I followed the instructions found here: https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/2033434. I figured out how to upload the .vib file to my datastore and loaded it with the following commands:

[root@localhost:~] esxcli software vib install -v /vmfs/volumes/SSD01/NVIDIA-367.92.vib

Installation Result

   Message: Operation finished successfully.

   Reboot Required: false

   VIBs Installed: NVIDIA_bootbank_NVIDIA-kepler-VMware_ESXi_6.5_Host_Driver_367.92-1OEM.650.0.0.4598673

   VIBs Removed:

   VIBs Skipped:

[root@localhost:~] /etc/init.d/xorg start

I did restart the host even though it was not supposed to be required. I now have NVIDIA Accellerated Graphics Driver for VMware ESXi 6.5 showing up under Packages for the Host. However, the Quadro K2200 under Hardware is still disabled, Toggle passthrough is grayed out and the Enable 3D Support on the VM is still grayed out.

Is there something simple that I'm missing? Is it harder than I thought to enable hardware graphics? Maybe I just have the wrong driver? Is any of this easier with through a different management interface? I've seen reference to c# and vCenter or vSphere, I think. Not sure if they are current and/or better. I've got multiple VMs running, so I've done OK with figuring out some of this stuff. If anyone can help me out with this, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks,
Mike

Horizon 7 Radius Authentication Problems

Has anyone had success with configuring RADIUS 2-Factor Auth on Horizon View 7?  I've been attempting to setup Duo on our pre-production HV7 environment and have had little success.

When trying to authenticate with 2-Factor enabled I receive a "Error Encountered While Authenticating" Alert from the Horizon Client.  A packet capture on the connection server shows no activity to or from our RADIUS server, its almost as if something in the application stack is broken.

Attached is a sample of what I've found in the debug logs, noting that there is an error at 2016-05-18T11:03:51.090-04:00 "Error setting up/performing authentication net.propero.portal.filters.ProperoAuthFilter.doFilter(SourceFile:472) java.lang.ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException" and another at 2016-05-18T11:03:51.091-04:00  "Finished processing: submit-authentication, Result: error, Error Code: BROKER_DISABLED, Error Message: this broker currently disabled, User Message: Error encountered while authenticating".  I have submitted a ticket with VMware, but I'm curious to see if anyone else is experiencing the issue, this is a freshly built environment and not an upgrade from 6.

Issue with ESXi 6.5 and Datastores disappearing after rebooting host

$

So this is my first attempt at  ESXi 6.5 and I wanted to see if anyone else has seen this. The hosts are ESXi 6.5 HP Custom image and everytime I reboot the host, the data stores disappear. Everything looks fine under Storage adapters and Storage Devices but the Datastores are just not showing up. However if I run a rescan of all storage adapters everything comes back just fine? I have never seen this with any previous version of ESX before. I thought that it could be an issue with out of date firmware which I then went to HP's site and downloaded the latest  Firmware available and applied it to one of the 3 in my cluster, but no change.

The Hardware is HP ProLiant BL460c Gen8.

I was just going through the video RDSH image preparation video in Horizon Cloud on Azure.  It's  mentioned after downloading the Windows 2012 R2 /Windows 2016 Datacenter editon from Azure Market it joins to the domain does the bootstrap  automatically after downloading the Daas Agent.

Question:-

I think n Soft layer it's recommended that Image shouldn't be join to domain.  Is that some thing different here?

Install NSX-T EDGE on Dell R510 failed with

Hi Folks,

When I tried to deploy NSX-T Edge VM on a Dell R510 host, it failed with following error

NSX Edge configuration has failed. The host does not support required cpu features: ['aes'].

Seems the issue had been discussed in this thread NSX-T Edge Appliance Requirements (AES), in which it's mentioned Xeon 56xx, Xeon E7-xxx, or Xeon E5-xxx CPU model is required to support AES. However my Dell R510 is equipped with "Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU X5670". Seems it already meets the requirement.

And in this thread Solved:  RE: R610. AES-NI - Dell Community it's said "AES-NI need motherboard revision C2 "

Wondering if there is any other way to work around this issue on my Dell R510 server?

Or I have to upgrade/replace motherboard?

Thanks a lot in advance!

Any chance to not to 'give' HBA wwn with 'unknown' status?

We have Hitachi Storage, and on it's side we're unable to filter unused HBA wwns from hosts.

vmhost1                      vmhba5                                     1000000533484E35                          online

Is there any way to hide 'unknown' HBA ports, make them not visible and leave them enabled?

Hi Everyone,

I am trying to generate a ESXi Host trend & forecasting report. I tried creating a custom group with the list of clusters that I need and ran the report with the help of created group. However I am getting the trend & forecasting of all hosts in a single graph.

Is it possible to generate the same with separate graphs for individual hosts OR at least separate graph for the hosts running on each cluster that I added in custom group. Appreciate your help in this regards.

Thank you !

Problem with Vmware tools 10.2 and VMware CAF Management Agent Service

$

Hi.

Just seeing if anyone else is having issues with Vmware 10.2 tools.

We saw across our network this service filling up our tcpip stack so no more connections could be created in our of machines, we have to restart machines via console to get them to log back into the domain or login locally and kill exe or service.

The error logging onto the Domain was "An attempt was made to logon, but the network logon service was not started"

Once we stopped the CAF Management Agent Service everything came back.

We have disabled this service via GPO a few days ago and have not seen a problem since. This is only happening on V10.2, All previous versions of VMware tools are fine.

Replication Modes and ARP Supression

$

Based on the replication modes. I see that multicast does no use the NSX controller but instead BIM traffic is just sent out via multicast.

But the other modes instead use ARP suppression to query the NSX controller first, therefore eliminating the broadcast to the VMs.

Questions:

  • Why would you enable hybrid or unicast if the ARP requests will be suppressed anyway?
  • If the Controller knows the ARP, will it not copy it to each of the hosts? Rather then the host querying the controller?
  • Why does multicast not use ARP suppression?

UAG Health Monitoring issue and DOSPreventionHandler

$

This was a post on the forums. I turned it into a document in hopes it will help someone someday.

This is a new implementation.

So I currently have 2 UAG's deployed. Version 3.1 and 3.2 currently deployed to Production

They are behind a NetScaler load balancer.

So after a few days the UAG's stop accepting connections on 443. I have to reboot these every night or the problem happens 100% of the time. At the moment I'm keeping 1 disabled on standby in case the other breaks during the workday. When these break, port 4172 remains open so any existing connections remain. It's only new connection attempts that fail.

I have an open case with VMWare but they've turned us over to Citrix support.I wish they would actually want to know what is causing this, since obviously something is breaking their UAG. This is a passive aggressive remark in case your reading VMWare.

We have 50 users. Yet see hundreds of stale connections on the UAG. We are not being DOS'ed as confirmed by our network team.

Citrix NetScaler Load Balancer: 192.24.16.172

UAG: 192.24.17.184

Citrix NetScaler Load Balancer is configured to perform a healthcheck per the recommended method via VMWare. Using GET /favicon.ico.

On the UAG:

netstat shows hundreds of these close_wait connections:

tcp        1      0 192.24.17.184:6443      192.24.16.172:46864     CLOSE_WAIT

SOLUTION:

I greatly dislike when I find a forum post with no answer so I will answer what the final solution to this was.

I had done some digging into the UAG console and noticed the below messages. From what I had gathered the UAG has a built in mechanism that protects itself from DDOS type attacks. Our Citrix Netscaler Load Balancer health check was triggering this mechanism. So essentially the UAG thought the Load Balancer was attacking it so it shut itself down. The DosPreventionHandler kicked in. Port 4172 (PCOIP) remained open, existing users remained connected, but port 443 stopped accepting new connection. When I spoke to VMWare support they confirmed my suspicion.

The workaround is to set the below settings to 0 in the UAG.

This document was generated from the following discussion: UAG breaks after a few days. They break 100% of the time.

Slow read speeds Cloudspeed Gen II. SSDs on Perc H710 mini

Recently installed 4 Cloudspeed Gen II. SSDs on our Dell server r630. They are set in a raid 5, however we are getting extremely slow read speeds from these ssds. The write speeds look fine in vmware, however, the write speeds are at around 30-40 mbps to the fileshare, which is extremely slow. We are certain it is a problem with vmware, as we recently moved from hyper-v, which didn't have any real issues (besides being hyper-v, yuck) and are struggling to pinpoint the issue. We have already disabled VAAI, and have checked the firmware for the drives, as well as, other arrays on the server. All arrays, even the small raid 10 in the server, is getting poor read speeds. We are using esx 6.5u1. Any thoughts?

vCenter multiple sessions of same user

Hi,

I have a "problem" with the sessions management of the vCenter since a very long time. Currently I have the VCSA 6.5.0.12000 Build Number 7119157

When I have a look at the sessions I see some user having a lot of sessions, some of these sessions are idle some are active. Why are there so much sessions of the same users? These people just connect to some VMs (VMRC) and nothing more.  As mentioned IP address it's 127.0.0.1 or the external IP address of vCenter server itself.
