Script to find linked clones with pending tasks

During Horizon View upgrades it's recommend to ensure that there are no pending Composer operations. Is there a way to see any pending operations so they can be paused or cancelled (e.g. a scheduled recompose set to run on user log off)?

Windows 10 Pro local machine crash on doing a TeamViewer session

$

Issue: When I try to run 3-4 VMs on VMware Workstation, then connect remotely via TeamViewer to that PC with those VMs on it running, in a few seconds (under 1-2 minutes), the local PC - the one with VMware not installed or running on it - will invariably BSOD.

I contacted TeamViewer tech support on this, but they were unable to help, what they suggested did not help any. Is this a known issue?
Is it a VMware Workstation, or Windows 10 issue, please?

The BSOD code and system file that failed are:

Stop Code: PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

What failed: win32kfull.sys

Can you do something to fix this? Or can Microsoft do it, and in what way should I report this to them, if so?

Please note I can provide the crash logs (minidump files) if necessary.

Thanks in advance for any comments or suggestions.

ramdisk 'root is full. vsanmgmt.log grows quickly

Hello,

I'm trying to fix an issue where my root ramdisk / Scatch/logs fills up after a few hows of uptime and esxi can no longer write to its log files.

Unfortunately the only datastore I have is the vsan datastore, and redirecting system logs to that datastore is not supported. I do have vsphere log insight setup but the local path is still {} /scratch/log

I have 3 servers in the vsan, but one of them fills up the root ramdisk much faster than the others. This is an Lenovo server whereas the others are HPE servers.

After spending a fair bit of time looking into this, trying to see if the IBM has a higher logging level than the others etc but I can't see why the Lenovo's logs grow so fast.

Here's what the logs currently look like:

root@MOX-ESXi1:/scratch/log] ls -lah -lS

total 29880

-rw-------    1 root     root       10.0M Mar 15 14:54 vsanmgmt.log

vCenter Upgrade Errors - Multiple Fails

$

  Hi All,

I'll start off by saying Hello everyone!

I have a major issue currently with vCenter Upgrade v5.1 to 6.5 (Windows Server).
I will list the steps and issues taken with the what is remaining!

1. On a low level production environment, we have a server 2008 r2 physical box with vcenter 5.1 installed. This needed to be upgraded to version 6.5 so all esxi hosts could be upgraded to 6.5 as well.

     a. First, i downloaded vcenter server v6.0.

     b. backed up sql jobs and databases of vcenter 5.x

     c. ran the autorun as administrator and it went through the pre reqs fine and said to start upgrade after entering the sso password.

     d. started uninstalling vcenter 5.x automatically and when it came to installing vcenter 6 - it failed with the below pictures

error.PNGerror1.PNG

     e. I searched for a while but could not resolve and most importantly there was no vcenter on the physical server anymore!

     f. decided to install vcenter server 6.5

     h. started the install - autorun - and it came up showing options to setup as a new intsall so i selected this and it asked for new site name and sso password - entered the details as before

     i. vcenter 6.5 installed all the way through and said successful.

     j. when loading the url to access the new vcenter (https://vcenter1.domain.co.uk) - it said page could not be displayed - this url was the same as vcenter 5.1

     k. i tried the IP address and it would not work - i then tried https://localhost - this loaded but when clicking the flash link - it would go to the original url above and do some sso and fail - blank page

     l. installed the vsphere client but could not access - came up with sso errors in the logs

     m. the error pointed to SSO - certificate - again after hours trying to resolve - no luck

     n. I then ended up following kb articles manually removing all vcenter data from the server (uninstalling all parts from control panel) but i left the sql instances installed.

     o. there was no option to remove the SSO

     p. i removed all program files / program data folders / registry links that were required to be removed - rebooted server.

I have now removed all folders / instances off the server but i really could do with installing v6.5 server vcenter but how to proceed?

When i installed vcenter 6.5 - although it wasn't working, i tried to manually deregister the server using the following commands but there was no visibal evidence that sso was installed on the server (file directories were not the same - no sso folders - no sso components)

cmsso-util unregister --node-pnid Platform_Services_Controller_System_Name --username administrator@your_domain_name --passwd vCenter_Single_Sign_On_password

cmsso-util unregister --node-pnid vCenter_Server_System_Name --username administrator@your_domain_name --passwd vCenter_Single_Sign_On_password

I was getting errors that it was failing to remove.

I believe i have to recreate the SSO certificates using the cert manager tool but when i try to reset the certificates, it does not accept the SSO password that i used to setup vcenter 6.5 with username administrator@vsphere.local - very strange.

Currently i have

     1. Backup of the vcenter 5.1 sql database that i require to import in the new vcenter 6.5

     2. removed all vcenter off the physical server including registry links and program data / program files folders

     3. rebooted server

     4. logged onto our other vcenter (vcsa) but there is no other nodes linking to this https://vcenter1.domain.co.uk vcenter appliance

Going Forwad

1. how do i proceed in succesfully installing vcenter server 6.5 with the same URL as the original vcenter https://vcenter1.domain.co.uk ?

2. how do i force / manually remove the SSO from the server?

I thought of installing server2016 on a hyper v > installing vcenter6.5 server on the hyper v machine and then accessing bash and again running the commands - will this resolve the issue?

All help would be really appreciated.

Thank You

AppVolumes 2.13.2.13 - Cannot Open files when "Cloud Volumes" Service in enabled

We have some applications local installed on the golden image (win7 x64):

- VLC

- Office 2010

- ERP

We are using appvolumes 2.12.2.13 on our system to publish specified apps.

Now we realized a problem:

If a user want to open a document/file from the ERP system in VLC or Outlook (using a specified CMD command) its not possible if the "Cloud Volumes" Service is enabled wherever a appstack is attached or not.

First i was thinking i could make some changes in the snapvol.cfg, but if no appstack is connected the error also occurs. It worked with the old version of appvolumes 2.12.

if i stop the "cloud volumes" service all commands working fine.

Any ideas how to fix this issue?

vSphere 6.5 VMFS 6 not reclaiming space after snapshot removal

After deleting snapshots or consolidating VMs the datastore does not reclaim data. vCenter version 6.5.0.14100 Build Number 7801515, VMware ESXi 6.5.0, 7388607, VMFS 6. Before removing snapshots and consolidating a VM I had 10.71 TB free on the datastore after the removal I had 9 TB, so during the snapshot removal I have lost over 1 TB of space.  I do have a VMware support ticket open as well but I wanted to see if anyone else has experienced this and if so what is the solution. (I have a vSphere 6.0 VMFS 5 environment that does not have this issue.)

Existing ESXI version - 5.5 AND 6.0 upgrade to 6.5

Hi friends,

We have following 2 Vsphere environment,

Existing ESXI version - 5.5 AND 6.0
vCenter version          - vCenter Server 5.5 GA (build 1312298)

                                   - vCenter Server 6.0 Update 1 (build 3018524)

Here are the following licenses,

VMware vSphere 5 Standard Essential plus (unlimited cores per CPU) 4CPU
vCenter Server 5 Essentials -  1 instance

VMware vSphere 6 Standard (unlimited cores per CPU) 4CPU
vCenter Server 6 Standard - 1 instance

Can I update this environment to Vsphere 6.5 with no cost within the support periods?

The existing licenses are for 2 for 6.0 but didn't upgrade the 1 vsphere which is still 5.5 (expired 10-29-2016). Can we upgrade to the 5.5 and 6.0 to

vsphere 6.5 with no cost since we have vmware support until 2-20-2019

Deploy VMs through Template

Dear Team,

Daily we have to deploy 100+ VMs, Just wanted to know how we can automate the process.

We have already created 2 customization, one will be used for windows and other for Linux, If we are deploying Linux VM through script so it should select existing LINUX customization and for Windows it should select existing Windows Customization.

Sript should ask below details

-VMname or it should take it from notepad/csv file

-We will keep ip details in notepad/csv file so it should assign ips to new VM from that file

-ClusterName where we have to deploy a VM

-DatastoreName where to deploy a VM.

After entering above input VM deployment task should start. if we have this type of script handy then any1 can deploy VMs independently.

Thanks in Advance.

Print Jobs Shifting Characters (ThinPrint - Redirected Printer)

$

0

We ran into this issue last year where some print jobs when printed would shift all characters one position forward like a Caesar Cipher. For instance A's would become B's, 1's would become 2's, G's would become H's etc. The fix for this was posted in KB2099984 where it instructed to set the HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\ThinPrint\TPView\EnableLegacyFonts DWORD to 1. We have had that in place for quite some time with no issues, however just recently it has started to happen again, even with the regkey still implemented on the host machine.

This appears to happen inside of IE when printing the PDF, and when opening directly with Reader/Acrobat. I opened the PDF in Chrome and it printed the characters properly. This also only appears to be certain PDF's, the one I am troubleshooting is a PDF form that is being exported out of a web application. The workaround I have right now is to print the PDF as an image since that bypasses any font dependencies or conversions or open the PDF in Chrome and print that way.

Horizon Client 4.7.0

AppVol 2.13.3.12

UEM 9.3.0.804

VMware Tools 10.1.10.6082533

Horizon Agent 7.3.2

Is anyone else seeing this issue show up again? I am not seeing anything in the thinprint.log indicating any issue as the print job is technically successful, just characters are skewed.

UPDATE:

Worked with support and they are aware of the issue and the Engineering team has assigned a Problem Report number to the issue and will be fixed in a later Client update which has no ETA as of yet. Another workaround was to downgrade to the 4.6.1 client.

Thank you for your response.

The issue was reported by only few users, so currently we don't have an KB article or public forum regarding this.

2059196 is the internal Problem Report number on which our Engineering team worked internally with the concerned team to get the issue resolved. We have also linked your Support Request # to the internal Problem Report number# 2059196.

Our Engineering team has acknowledged and taken ownership of the problem and have made that issue to be resolved in a future release/version of VMware Horizon Client. Currently there is no ETA as to the release date, or which product version the fix will be in. We'll keep you updated once the fix is available.

Mouse jumps around with 14.1.1 and multiple monitors - XP guest crash - falling back to 14.0.0

I have a Windows 7 Pro host and a Windows 7 Pro guest and was on VMware Workstation 14.0.0 then upgraded to 14.1.1.  My host is a desktop Xeon X99 based workstation.  I also updated the vmware tools in the guest to the 10.2 as prompted.  I have three monitors and use all three for the guest.

I noticed, almost immediately that my mouse would sometimes 'jump' from the center monitor to the monitor to my left. There does not seem to be much rhyme nor reason but in a text  editor, UltraEdit, i noticed that when I pushed the Undo key multiple times in a row, 5-10 times, the cursor at first disappears and always jumps off the button.

I am using a Microsoft Mouse with the standard Windows mouse driver. I do not use the 'enhanced' VMware keyboard driver.

I saw a user with a laptop and a jumping mouse which appears attributed to a driver.  I also have an Windows XP guest which crashed immediately after starting it.

Beware of this release!  I am falling back to 14.0.0.

Horizon Web Access (Blast) not loading in some browsers

$

Hello there!

We've got an issue with the horizon web access on version 7.4 (client version 4.6). The web page has a valid https certificate assigned to it.

As I try to log in with firefox, everything works just fine and I can log onto my VDI desktop as I would expect it to.

But safari, chrome, opera and internet explorer are not working with this behaviour:

  • Safari & internet explorer:
    I can log in there, but as I click on my desktop, the browser redirects me to the home page and I have to log in again.
  • Chrome & opera:
    In chrome, I can enter my username and my password but then, it just stucks with a loading icon.

I tried to find something in the knowledgebase but I didn't find anything useful or anything that worked for us.

Do you have any idea what could cause this issue?

Thanks in advance!

Greetings,

Sandro

Cannot choose Networks on ESXi 6.5 U1 via Webclient

I have configured 4 Network Interfaces (Uplink1, Uplink2, DMZ, isolated)

Some older machines have a configuration like (in .vmx) that work fine with Uplink1 or Uplink2.

ethernet0.present = "true"

ethernet0.wakeOnPcktRcv = "false"

ethernet0.networkName = "Uplink1"

ethernet0.addressType = "generated"

ethernet0.connectionType = "bridged"

ethernet0.generatedAddress = "00:0c:29:b9:5f:c6"

ethernet0.pciSlotNumber = "32"

ethernet0.generatedAddressOffset = "0"

I now try to add a new Machine, but can only assign DMZ or isolated as network adapters

ethernet0.virtualDev = "vmxnet3"

ethernet0.networkName = "DMZ"

ethernet0.uptCompatibility = "TRUE"

ethernet0.present = "TRUE"

ethernet0.generatedAddress = "00:0c:29:62:cc:e1"

ethernet0.addressType = "generated"

ethernet0.pciSlotNumber = "192"

ethernet0.generatedAddressOffset = "0"until now I have n

Webclient only shows DMZ and isolated as available adapters. If I manually edit ethernet0.networkName it does not work either.

Any ideas?

If I close Fusion (after I've been using Windows XP VM for example), sometimes I lose bluetooth. It is lost entirely... bluetooth icon at the right side of my macbook's menu bar says "Bluetooth not available". It will not come back until I restart macos. This is Fusion Pro 10.0.1 on High Sierra supplemental update. It's a real nuissance because I use my macbook in clamshell mode with bluetooth keyboard and mouse. Can't use them without bluetooth.

Windows 10 USB Redirection Fails to work on login

We have Windows 10 and Windows 7 Desktops all running Horizon View Agent 7.4.0.  These are all instant clone desktops.  On first login the Windows 10 desktops usb redirection fails with the error USB redirection is not available for this desktop

If you then disconnect and reconnect after like 30 seconds of USB initializing (which is a long time compared to Windows 7) the USB devices will show up properly.

On  our Windows 7 desktops the USB redirection works properly every time and is much faster to initialize.

Windows 10 Thin Print Printers "Stacked" on Same Printer In Devices and Printers

$

On Windows 10 Desktops our Thin Print printers are all "stacked".  For example if I have multiple printers attached I'll only see on via devices and printers, but if I then right click the printer all of the menu items have an arrow next to them and I can then choose the sub printers from that.  If I do this in Printers & Scanners I can click the print queue and choose manage where it then says

"This device has a few different functions.  Pick on to manage settings for that function."

The other "functions" are in fact the other printers.  While this works this isn't at all intuitive for the users.  Is there a way to get these printers separated out into their individual printers?
