GNS3 to two virtual machines on one host, virtual adapters

How's it going, i've been trying for two days to get this working and cannot find the answer even after the mountainess amounts i've read. I have been trying to get 2 virtual machines (Red hat 4 and Windows XP SP2) on one machine to communicate with a virtual router (Cisco 2621) in GNS3 which is on a different machine. Thats two physical machines altogether. What happened earlier..I was using VMWare Player 5 with two virtual machines. I couldn't get the virtual router in GNS3 to ping the host machine of the 2 virtual machines (im new to GNS3 aswell) so I used a physical router for a while and got the two host machines to ping each other but could not get the virtual machines to ping in or out even though both of their firewalls were turned off. I got fed up so I installed Workstation 9 on a different machine in the hope that the virtual network editor might have an answer. I have two virtual machines installed (Red hat 4 and xp again) for it now and everything was working fine until I added a virtual network adapter in settings. Workstation freezes after I press OK and try to go back into settings. I have no option but to 'end task', this is driving me nuts because its definately the fact that I added an adapter because the same thing happened with the second virtual machine. The first time with XP I added the network adapter as custom onto VMNet3 and the second time on the Linux VM I added the adapter as NAT too see if it made a difference.

My questions are please:

1. I need to start experimenting so number 1 is why is it freezing and how can I fix it?

2. Is creating virtual adapters the way to get the virtual machines communicating with my virtual router that is on a seperate machine than the host? (There is only 1 NIC on the host machine with the two VMs)

Thank you for any help i'm fairly new to this. Much appreciated. (PS I already tried restarting the computer).
